I upgraded ec-fonts-mftraced to v1.0.10a-2 and just as you promised,
xmgrace works
The reason for the failure to connect to the database seems to be
localization. Login works fine with with LC_CTYPE=de_US, but it fails
with LC_CTYPE=en_US
As a workaround gnue-designer can be started by a little wrapper script,
that does "export LC_ALL=en_US"
