I did not have contrib in the apt line. I had simply copied the line
from the backports instructions (deb
http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main). I
have now added contrib (deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports
squeeze-backports main contrib), updated

Unfortunately I installed the backports nvidia-settings and still get
the same error: Unable to load X Server Display Configuration page:
Failed to query NoScanout for screen 0.
For the record this is what I did to install the backports version:
