Source: rlwrap
Severity: important

Hello.

The rlwrap package has a seriously outdated version of rlwrap and multiple bugs open against it indicating it needs to be updated to a newer version of rlwrap in order to fix those.

The last activity by the sole listed maintainer, Mike Miller <mtmil...@debian.org>, shows that no activity has been done on the package since 2018 when they uploaded 0.43-1 to the repositories [1].

There has been no activity on the Salsa repository since two years ago (which did some packaging cleanup, rules changes, some Salsa CI changes, etc. back in April of 2020) and no release updates since 0.43-1.  [2]  There were staged 0.43-2 packaging changes (debhelper changes, misspellings, cleanup of metadata fields, etc.) done by Janitor but nothing ever landed (and remains in UNRELEASED).

Upstream between 2017 and 2021 did not have any activity, however upstream began rereleasing versions starting with 0.44 in 2021.  [3]

Further, according to the contributions pages of the sole maintainer Mike Miller [4], there has been no activity since December 2020 by the individual.  This may not reflect all activity, but is a pretty good indicator there's been "limited activity" from the DD in question, so I have CC'd the MIA team on this as well.

I emailed the Maintainer over a week ago as well, asking if they needed assistance or would like me to help comaintain the package - I have not received any response to that inquiry.

According to the rules for Package Salvaging [5] [6] a package is eligible for salvaging based on certain criterion.

The criterion that this package meets are, in my belief, as follows:

 1. There are open bugs AND missing upstream releases of the rlwrap software, including bugs where there are substantially large issues that are acknowledged but not updated/fixed,  2. A new package upload of a newer version of rlwrap is needed to fix these issues, and
 3. The following additional criterion:
    - There has been no activity regarding the package for 6 months other than bugs and a response from over 2 years ago on it, and     - Bugs exist for more than one major missing upstream version in that 0.44 is needed to be packaged (or later) to fix the readline bugs that're happening and have been persistent for over 2 years.

Under these eligibility criterion, the package is eligible for salvaging.

If the original maintainer can be reached, and would prefer to simply add me as a co-maintainer, I would be willing to accept that.  However, if the original maintainer would like to relinquish management, or cannot be reached, I would accept taking over the package and its maintenance in Debian.

Thomas
