After rebooting, this inconsistent behavior has gone away, and I can't
reproduce it, so go ahead and close this bug.

I'm using a dual monitor setup, using the ATI driver's MergedFB
mode from the xserver-xorg-video-ati package.
xdpyinfo thinks I have one display and one screen, with width equal to
the sum of my two monitors' widths. The Gnome
