Greetings!  You have not been able to start the maxima subprocess from
within xmaxima.  You likely have a unix socket opening problem.  Try
running xmaxima from a terminal and look for errors.  Failing that,
then run strace -f xmaxima and look for errors.  Lastly, make sure you
can run plain maxima from a terminal or emacs.

I'd like to close this ASAP, so please let me know how things are
going.
