I first tested 3.0.2-4 to make sure that I could still reproduce the crash on my test machine (different from the machine I first reported on), and xxdiff segfaulted on the first try, as expected. I then installed your attached 3.1-1 and tried twice to get it to crash, without success.
I think you may have a winner.
