As far as I can tell, less is the only program on my machine behaving 
strangely. Also, if I ssh into another machine from mine, less seems to work 
correctly, while the opposite does not work (ssh to my machine from another).

I also downloaded and compiled less-382, and it works just fine.

I've attached the output of strace, but I suspect you may not find anything 
interesting in it because the problem seems to go away when I run less 
through strace. I used this command:
