When I use the 2.6 kernel it cannot find any hard drives at all.

I have reinstalled with the latest release (28th March 2005). When I use
the 2.4 kernel it takes around 30 minutes to finish detecting the
hardware and then crashes when I try to partition the drive. Essentially
a blue screen with a flashing prompt is displayed. I have waited for 2
hours but nothing appears to be happening.
When I use the 2.6 kernel it cannot find any hard drives at all.
