but I can't figure out how to use this syntax to attach a file.

I just turned on debugging in your mozilla-thunderbird script which
comes with the Debian package and notice that it is not doing the same
as the
Package: mozilla-thunderbird
Version: 1.0-3
Severity: normal
Specifically,
mozilla-thunderbird -compose attachment=file:///path/to/file
does not work if thunderbird is already running.
The compose window is opened, but the file is not attached.
This is a pain, since I believe OpenOffice.org
