Aha, there's an update on this!
Patrick, the background feature is interesting. However, it doesn't
replace the ability to control the process. I usually want things to be
on the foreground, but if I see that I'm copying a wrong 2-GiB file, I'd
like to be able to abort it, which I can't.

to reproduce: initiate an ssh file transfer. Neither arrow keys, nor
'A'bort work. Pressing C-c does abort, but mc segfaults or hangs
afterwards (presumably during reading ssh filesystem). These may be
