Was there an error *before* this? Why does
/var/backups/dc=jamux,dc=com-2.2.23-1.ldapdb exist, and what are its
contents?

Severity downgraded, because the above is a deliberate safety check in the
code to prevent destroying backups on error.

I'm sorry my reply is so late. I see no sign of the above message in
my incoming mail nor in my logs.

The error started with the recent upgrade. I had not previously used
nor configured slapd apart from the installation. Subsequently I only
looked at the docs.

At least once since the failed upgrade I deleted that directory and
re-ran aptitude dist-upgrade.

I have the following from a backup tape

,----[ ls -l /var/backups/dc=jamux,dc=com-2.2.23-1.ldapdb ]
total 484
-rw------- 1 root root 8192 Apr 1 17:16 __db.001
-rw------- 1 root root 270336 Apr 1 17:16 __db.002

Before thinking to look at the Bug web interface, I did 'aptitude
purge slapd' and 'aptitude install slapd' so I'm afraid I cannot
provide more evidence on the bug.

Now I see:

,----[ ls -l /var/backups/dc=jamux,dc=com-2.2.23-1.ldapdb ]
total 448
-rw------- 1 root root 8192 Apr 15 15:54 __db.001

-rw------- 1 root root 42173 Apr 20 17:39 log.0000000001

And i also notice:
