if the user creates a new (sub)folder, this is created as mbox. Creation of subfolders is however only possible on Maildir-type folders. So, a user can't create a subfolder on any user-created folder. (And, BTW, Thunderbird refused to subscribe to Maildir-type folders - but that _might_ be a client issue though I don't expect it.)
