The workaround (and the reason why this isn't RC for sarge) is to build
your kernel with CONFIG_MODVERSIONS

The kernel source
It shouldn't matter what kernel you're running. It should only matter
what kernel source tree you ran make-kpkg from inside. You need to run
make-kpkg from inside a kernel source tree that's identically configured
to the kernel that you're running.
This makes sense, and it is the case...

Just as an FYI, I'm running 1.3.81 on an SMP powermac g5 with no build

Yeah, likewise we're running 1.3.81 built with make-kpkg on a bunch of x86
systems here, both SMP and otherwise. Including all of the current

I did not know that I am supposed to build the module while running the
SMP kernel. Tried that and still no luck using make-kpkg...
