Turns out that the problem was with the partition table on the disk. When I tried a different disk in the same computer, I was able to see the partition table just fine.
It still does weird things with the cdrom drive, though. rc -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
