The error you see was already reported against the docbook-xsl package,
though it's not sure, that it's caused by docbook-xsl (I did not have
time to examine

This may be a problem in passivetex, or not.
I cannot generate PDF output. Although I get
the I/O error below when generating text, the
text seems to generate fine. I just submitted
this as a separate bug to 'xsltproc' in case the I/O error
