Have you tried /usr/bin/update-pciids from the pciutils packages? :)
You could setup a cronjob to run that.

There are several copies of pci.ids lying around :( Why not centralize
them to /usr/share/hwdata/pci.ids?
/etc/pci.ids -> ../usr/share/misc/pci.ids
/usr/share/xviddetect/pci.ids -> /usr/share/hwdata/pci.ids
