Upgrading to kernel 2.6.14 solves this problem. At least inserting a
USB key creates an entry in /dev which can be mounted. The automount
stuff doesn't work in my installation, but I don't really mind.

2.6.14-4 is the latest version, you probably refer to the ABI which
is 2 indeed.

Please do not blindly reassing bugs to udev, it's quite obvious that
this is either a broken media or a kernel bug:
/dev/scsi/host7/bus0/target0/lun0:3ldm_parse_privhead(): Cannot find
