I just reinstalled a Woody (on another disk, so I kept the other around
for debugging, if necessary), and then upgraded it to Etch yesterday on
the same machine, and this corruption bug disappeared. It seems to me it
has something to do with some upgrade in Etch.

I think I have the same problem of corruption than #320328, but on a
Matrox MGA G200 AGP.
I did not experience this before upgrading Xorg from 6.8.2 to 6.9.0.
