Upon further examination, the extra ConfigureNotify event (generated in add_window.c) is not the source of the flickering.
The problem is apparently caused by two extra VisibilityNotify events, one reporting that the window is totally obscured, and the next one reporting that the window is again visible. The extraneous events are not synthetic (send_event == 0).
