I (Eric Shattow) am the author of the above patch in feh bugtracker. Works for me, it's been included upstream by the feh author. Given the extended time between upstream releases, I ask that this patch be considered for debian feh 1.3.4 inclusion.
Inccidentally, there is an instance of feh svn being maintained by raster (part of the E17 enlightenment svn). This patch is included upstream in those feh sources also.
