Hi, I don't know why there has to be a package linux-image-2.6.16-1 and linux-image-2.6.16-2. But if it has to be the nvidia-kernel package should follow this numbering. Otherwise the nvidia modules will be installed in a different directory and not be found.
Additionally the nvidia-kernel package should depend on the corresponding linux-image package, not only on the linux-image metapackage. With the current dependencies you can get a new linux-image with a different modules directory with an apt-get update and lose your graphics support after the next reboot.
