Hi,

I don't know why there has to be a package linux-image-2.6.16-1 and
linux-image-2.6.16-2. But if it has to be the nvidia-kernel package
should follow this numbering. Otherwise the nvidia modules will be
installed in a different directory and not be found.

Additionally the nvidia-kernel package should depend on the
corresponding linux-image package, not only on the linux-image
metapackage. With the current dependencies you can get a new
linux-image with a different modules directory with an apt-get
update and lose your graphics support after the next reboot.

Package: nvidia-kernel-2.6-686
Depends: nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686, linux-image-2.6-686

Package: linux-image-2.6-686
etch: Depends: linux-image-2.6.15-1-686
which is a different kernel version and incompatible
sid: Depends: linux-image-2.6.16-2-686
which installs modules in a different directory
         (lib/modules/2.6.16-2-686 vs. lib/modules/2.6.16-1-686)

Because of the weak dependencies there is no working combination of
the nvidia-kernel and linux-image packages available in any of the
debian trees for i686 and kernel 2.6:

sarge:
- no nvidia-kernel package for 2.6 at all

etch:
- nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686
- linux-image-2.6.15-1-686

sid:
- nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686
- linux-image-2.6.16-2-686

Regards,

Uwe
