I've tried to take another stab at resolving this bug today. In my opinion, there is still too much controversy surrounding the LSB issue. The proposal never made it into the policy, there is the exit code problem, and all the relevant discussions seem to have stalled at least one year ago. The init script will require significant changes (like switching to LSB output functions, etc), providing little or no benefit to the end user. At this point I'm putting this issue on a back burner by lowering severity to wishlist, with an intention to reexamine it in the future (most probably not sooner than the etch release).
