I have discovered that this problem was caused by my system loading two
different modules for my sound card (es1371 and snd_ens1371). I have
deleted snd_ens1371 from the /lib/modules directory so that only the
es1371 module is loaded. I now get sound again.

I have installed Debian 3.1 r2. I initially installed the 2.4 kernel and I
got sound from my soundcard. I then added the 2.6 kernel and configured LILO
so I can boot either the 2.4 or 2.6 kernel. I still get sound when I boot
