I just verified this to be a hardware problem, so please close the bug report.
I was indeed able to restore the DVD burner's burning capability by disassembling and cleaning the laser lens with alcohol. I read about this on an e-mail list somewhere. Perhaps that should be a standard suggestion for these kinds of symptoms? It really wasn't hard at all, only need one of those little screwdrivers.
