hi,
since kmplayer relies upon mplayer for dvd, wmv, etc support,
wrong, kmplayer on debian relies upon xine backend.
please see http://bugs.debian.org/360092 for the background.
mplayer should be among the suggests or the recommends for kmplayer so that

i believe that at a minimum mplayer should be in the suggests. i
believe that the doc you refer to leaves open the option to suggest a
non-free package.
i use apt-get and usually install all recommends/suggests.
