I recommend to first uograde to a recent version of cdrtools

if the error
/usr/bin/cdrecord: Input/output error. write_g1: scsi sendcmd: no
ever since I very first got my debian disks I have been unable to
write audio format to cdr's. I would have metioned it before but, it's
just now that I have started to learn to use the bug reporting system.
k3b used to backup my data onto cdrw's just fine, but reciently stopped
doing that.

I have always been able to cancel the burning process, always
destroying a disk by doing so.
my diskdrive works perfectly under windows.
gnome baker completely locked up when I tried it.

Would it be possible for you to attach the log from K3b? I think there is a
button called debugging output or something like that in the window that
pops up when the burning process starts.

So the two problems you have are:
1- cannot burn Audio CDs on CD-R media
2- cannot burn Data CDs on CD-RW
