This looks like a compiler bug on ARM. If you recompile
lib/ext2fs/badblocks.o without -O2, it doesn't core dump any

With the attached patch, I've worked around the problem for now. It
seems pretty clearly a ARM gcc 4.1 bug, so I've cloned this bug and
assigned the clone of the bug report to the gcc-4.1
