I'm afraid I have to disagree with your statement that "2.4 kernels are
slowly phasing out". It seems that a lot of VPS suppliers are using 2.4
kernels in their virtual machines. Underneath it's running a 2.6
kernel, but products like Virtuozzo seem to like 2.4 kernels.

production one so I can't really try again with the 2.4 kernel to see if
it's reproducible, but I might try on another machine if I get time.

I just upgraded to the 2.2 apache packages in testing and am getting a
segfault on startup. Running /usr/sbin/apache2 with the -X option
under gdb gives the following:
