Package: tesseract-ocr
Version: 1.02-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

I wanted to test tesseract, but couldn't get it to work as it seems a
whole directory with executables and configs is missing.

from /usr/share/doc/tesseract-ocr/README:
The executable must reside in the same directory as the tessdata directory

I downloaded the .tar.gz from the sourceforge project and that contains
a tessdata directory. The contents of that dir are not included in the
package, nor in any other package I could find.

Usage example:
$ tesseract xwVfbbC7hv.tiff bla batch
Could not open file, /usr/bin/tessdata/freq-dawg

#update-db

$ locate tessdata
$

So concluding: a directory with vital files is missing, and that dir is
expected to be in a non-FHS compliant spot. I'm guessing a patch will be
necessary to make this package comply with Debian FHS, I'll take a look at the
source, but can't promise anything.

Thanks!

Regards,

Guus
