I've not mentioned lilo, as I could not see how that is related.
maks 08:41:07 fjp: because lilo only passes the major and minor nr of
the root device, so we mknod it and can't waitloop for it to appear
We could add this info for 4.0r1.

4.6.5 Boot timing issues
On some hardware setups (usb, lilo bootloader, md root..) the device
creation can happen to late for the boot scripts to act on. As quick
workaround issue the bootparam rootdelay=9.
