Finally I've gotten around to running opbenbox. I can report that tilda
behaves correctly under openbox. So, it seems this is actually a
problem with metacity.

I've configured it to open at 1280x0 on my dual-screen system (using
an nVidia TwinView setup). However, the window only sometimes appears
there.
