Hi, I'd like to help with this bug.
I have a functional package for 1.8. If you are OK with it, I could finalise it and then let you mentor the upload. You can remain maintainer if you wish, or I can take over the package if you prefer.
Before the upload is ready, I would like to clean and modernise the package (update to the latest debhelper, migrate to 3.0 (quilt) format...).
I have some questions regarding the SONAME (which needs bumping) that I intend on asking on d-ment...@l.d.o.
