Just to follow up - I also have a Thinkpad X40 and also saw this
problem. For whatever reason, appending nolapic to my kernel options
fixes this for me.

I would rather think that it is the same as this one:

so the nolapic boot option might help.

There is a patch. But on top of that, you should also add your machine
to a list. You'll need dmidecode for that.

Suspend to disk is broken in an interesting way on a Thinkpad X40 with the
never kernels. Suspending works, but is very slow. I seem to get a small
