I close this bug from 2007 now:
- Release 1.0.19~cvs20070730-1 is unsupported
- no answer for more then 12 weeks

I have tried with 640x480 and 352x288, resulting in exactly the same problems.

xcam also fails to display or capture any image from the Philips
webcam. Upon pressing the 'Play' button, an error message box pops up:
"Failed to start webcam: Invalid argument"
After jumping between the other available devices, upon selecting the
webcam (pwc) device, xcam terminates immediately:
