Bug#459564: Yes commenting pref("network.protocol-handler.external.http", true) fixes the symtoms but does not cure the real PB

BUT there are a couple of other probably upstream bugs that are being
shown by setting this variable: the http protocol when used internally
by icedove itself shall not be affected by this variable.

I have at least found two areas:
    - automatic proxy URL configuration,
    - plugin automatic update

So may I suggest to not retitle this bug as: to not make use
network.protocol-handler.external.http for internally used oeprations
