This very much looks like a version mismatch between the
ltmain.sh and the
Package: libtool
Version: 2.1a+cvs1.2525+20071016-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
The package from experimental is unusable. In fact, libtool doesn't even
recognize --tag=CC or --mode=compile, or anything else (--features, for
example).
Here's a log of a gthumb build

This very much looks like a version mismatch between the
ltmain.sh and the libtool.m4 (and other macro) files.
Maybe you used 1.5.x libtoolize?
Cheers,
Ralf

$ libtool --version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool 1.2525 2007/10/16 22:45:48) 2.1a
This is irrelevant.
$ ./libtool --version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.24 Debian 1.5.24-1ubuntu1 (1.1220.2.456 2007/06/24

This is the bug.

Thanks anyway, I'll have to read something about libtool.
Kindly,
