I've got it here too.
Note my OO has been running for 2.0.4 on my lenny installation, and I try to
keep everything nice and up-to-date.
Now I notice I can not run the svg extension (the same that runs fine under XP).

As soon as you want to use java extension, it fails. Note the package I
want to use is sun-java6-jre.

Uhm, no. For base you would have been right, but writer can also be used
without JRE, so it doesn't make
