In either case, whenever you want GRUB 2 to be loaded directly from MBR,
you can do so by issuing (as root) the following command:

upgrade-from-grub-legacy
That sounds like you should be able to just run it and reboot, wether you
choose to chainload or not.
I have now commited a fix for it,

I installed on a system with grub 1, and since I was at the console,
decided to answer no to grub-pc/chainload_from_menu.lst.
I immediatly ran upgrade-from-grub-legacy, deleted menu.lst, and
rebooted. Silly me..
System came up in grub2,
