Sorry - user error, close this bug - or treat it as a documentation/ wishlist item (see below).
I did not read /usr/share/doc/googleearth/README.linux. Once I did then it gave me an idea, which worked. I was already at the latest version of the nVidia driver, but recompiling it fixed the problem. (Presumably the upgrade I had done broke something which only googleearth was relying on.) You could perhaps change that README file so that the text which now says "upgrade" instead says "upgrade if a driver is available, otherwise recompile the driver - this has been known to fix problems" :-) Again, my apologies.
