Found the fault...well kind of...but anyway solved for me.
Previous versions of Abiword respected the Gnome or Xfce default
browser. Current version seems to ignore $BROWSER and DE defaults. I
found the solution in a bug report for Ubuntu

You should set the BROWSER environment variable. AbiWord doesn't talk to
GNOME so I believe it tries to use sensible-browser. Heck, the picard
package is the same way. Do yourself a favor and set your BROWSER to
firefox.
I've set this bug to normal for now.
