After upgrading, I notice that after unlocking the screen I'm usually
presented with a message There has been x failed login attempts. This
message stays on the screen for an inscreasingly irritating period of
time (OK, only 4 seconds or so

It is annoying that dismissing the unlock dialog without typing
anything (or just timing out) counts as a failed login, but that's PAM
braindamage.
