I did some more tests (again today (*))
first let me give names to the 3 situations
1) 'mplayer -stop-xscreensaver' with mouse in window
2) 'mplayer -stop-xscreensaver -fs' fullscreen
3) 'mplayer -stop-xscreensaver' with mouse outside of window

Sorry false alarm
The cause is the package libavcodec51 from the debian-multimedia
repository that i have installed on this computer (because i have
needed to install cinelerra)

What command line do you use to crash, and which file do you play?
If you use debian/lenny/testing or debian/sid/unstable,
please install the packages 'gdb' and 'mplayer-dbg';

Looks like i have a segfault trying to run gmplayer with this patch,
with or without xscreensaver running, I don't use gnome
