Patches for enabling libv4l in VLC are available in libv4l's upstream code. It would be a very good thing if VLC could make use of it, either in debian or upstream. VLC has support for libv4l since 0.9.6 and I have added the libv4l-dev build-dep in 0.9.8a-1. vlc-nox shows a depedency on
