the patch for 2.4.2 isn't the right one for this issue.
I wrote a patch for the 2.4.3-version for personal usage. However it seems to
work out fine, so i've been asked to provide it to the mailing list.
This should do the trick:

The Pidgin developers provide a patch which seems to work with the
libpurple Version of Lenny: http://www.pidgin.im/pidgin-2.4.2-icq6.patch
Maybe this would be an option for an update in Lenny?
