I have also encountered the same issue after restarting KDM today. I suspect
the NVIDIA binary driver is to blame, as it is very slow to start up.
To resolve the problem I set in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc:
[X-*-Core]
ServerTimeout=120
That gives the server time to start up even though the NVI

On power-cycle system startup KDM fails to start probably because of heavy load.
