Also, many evolution errors along the bottom bar just gave a ! in a yield sign ... no error message; to clear the errors, I had to click on the bottom bar to bring up the error (the blank ! yield error), hit enter to dismiss the error, and then repeat several times. The workaround for me was to quit evolution (which can take some time with this bug), rename (safe) or remove (risky) the ~/.evolution folder, then restart evolution and allow it to rebuild the IMAP and other evolution information in a fresh ~/.evolution folder. dpkg-reconfigure evolution did not work, nor did dpkg-reconfigure evolution-*, where the * was propagated in the command line. I do not know what caused the \b(cor|dis|e)ruption of my ~/.evolution folder.
