Hi, I had the same bug and stumbled upon this bugreport. Since I've solved half of it, I'm sharing the solution.
The problem is an lxpanel crash when the window manager dies/restarts. It has been fixed upstream. The corresponding commit can be found in the git repo of lxpanel [1]. I said I had solved half of the problem because openbox still (as of today) doesn't support 24bit color depths. A work-around is to use another vga adapter in qemu (it seems only qemu is using 24bit depths). If you don't, penbox will still exit but at least the panel will stop flickering and the windows won't drift anymore.
