I think I've found the culprit now. Doing some research lead me to bug report #519340. Invoking gnome-settings-daemon on the command line using parameters --debug and --no-daemon showed up the following error message: ERROR: Caught a segmentation fault while loading plugin file: /usr/lib/gstrea

Here is some additional information that could help to narrow the number of possible reasons down a little bit (at least I hope so). The following packages were upgraded right before gnome-settings-daemon stopped working: gstreamer0.10-esd 0.10.16-1 -> 0.10.16-2 gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.13-
