I think I've found the culprit now.
Doing some research lead me to bug report #519340.
Invoking gnome-settings-daemon on the command line using parameters
--debug and --no-daemon showed up the following error message:
ERROR: Caught a segmentation fault while loading plugin file:
/usr/lib/gstrea
Here is some additional information that could help to narrow the number of
possible reasons down a little bit (at least I hope so).
The following packages were upgraded right before gnome-settings-daemon stopped
working:
gstreamer0.10-esd 0.10.16-1 -> 0.10.16-2
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.13-

Package: libglib2.0-0
Version: 2.22.1-1
Severity: important
Upgrading libglib2.0-0 to version 2.22.1-1 (required by gnome 2.28) breaks
gnome-settings-daemon version 2.26.1-2. Therefore most settings cannot be
applied while starting the gnome desktop.
