Sorry about the delay replyign to this.

Some other config directories work that way, some don't (eg exim4).
I don't suppose this would be harmful, but on the other hand I'm not
sure it gains much either. I'd probably accept a patch that implemented
this but it's not a priority for implementation otherwise.
