VLC checks whether the standard output is a terminal. I find it pretty damn idiotic for emacs to emulate a terminal but, not quite. It might as well use a pipe or a local socket pair then. Unless someone can point to a simple function in libc to check whether ANSI color or ANSI control codes are supported, I am not going to fix this upstream. I cannot find any standard and simple way to hit termcap or terminfo for that purpose.
